Part 8

Plot:
Sakthivel (Ajith Kumar) is an implicitly obedient son of a sincere policeman, Rajarajan (Raj Kiran). Sakthi and his dad’s dream is the same: That of seeing him enter the police force. The entire family comprising two other daughters, the mom (Saranya) and a wastrel of a brother-in-law (Vivek) are cuddly and close-knit. Rajarajan is from the old school of life and honesty is his watchword. In a venal system, this lands him in trouble often.

Divya (Trisha Krishnan), a college girl, is a charming full-of-beans girl. She has some comical run-ins with Sakthi, and eventually falls in love with him. Elsewhere, Rajarajan, who books an MLA’s son for an offence, is hauled up over the coals and sent on a ‘punishment transfer’ to a place, which is run as personal fief by a local dada, Varadarajan (Ajay). One thing leads to another, and Sakthi is unwittingly sucked into the unholy vortex. Just as he is about to join the police force, destiny decrees otherwise: His life is not going to be the same again. A dad’s dream lies shattered while a son, despite his unwillingness, has to fight a honest war beyond the matrix of a law. It is a situation that is actually an emotional cauldron. How the dad and son reconcile to the new reality is the story.

Review:
Shiva(Ajith) is a mechanic, a daredevil known for attempting daring acts for the sake of a bet. One such bet takes him to Delhi where he meets a woman who asks him to deliver a letter to her younger sister. This younger sister is Thilothama(Manu), who is all set to be engaged to Ranjan(Karan), the man of her father's choice. But that doesn't stop Shiva from falling in love with her. Against her better sense, Thilothama too finds herself falling for Shiva.

As long as the movie deals with the interactions between Ajith and Manu, it is enjoyable. The confusion of Manu has been brought out especially well as she struggles between acknowledging her feelings for Ajith and accepting her father's orders. The couple's trip to Delhi is one such portion that is unhindered by others and the sequence does a good job of registering Manu's gradual falling for Ajith. Even the bet Ajith makes with Manu, though seeming silly in concept, has been executed well.

It is only with the other characters that Sharan slips up. Unlike the recent Minnale, he makes things easy for Manu (and therefore, less interesting for us) by making Karan an easy-to-dislike character. And Sharan doesn't stop there. Karan's mother is an irritating character that any woman would dread getting for her mother-in-law. Such cardboard characters take any seriousness out of the movie. And though Vivek's character has some nice moments and lines, many of his acts and dialogs are unrealistic. The strictness of Manu's father is also overdone though Karan's father is much more believable.

The movie is aided by a well-handled climax. Ajith's visit to Manu's house, his dialogs there and the subsequent events are picturised in a nice manner that presents a satisfactory closure to the issues. Ajith comes into his own in these scenes and his outburst at Girish Karnad is convincing. Though Karan's character takes a beating thereafter, the climax isn't lengthened beyond what is needed and is crisp.

Part 3

Plot:
It centres around Vennila's connections with the three men in her life. Satish (Ajith) who wins a college competition and becomes the object of the arrogant Vennila's ire. In a fit of pique, Vennila feigns love to him, gets him to marry her, and then ditches him on the wedding night. The whole affair leaving the innocent soft-hearted youth in a state of shock, and later hospitalised and in deep coma. Santosh, the new entrant to college, who chooses Vennila for his games of one-upmanship, leaving her puzzled as to his motive. And Amar, her fiance from abroad, who she later realises is a psychopath. An interesting scenario which had the potential to turn into a good, suspense thriller. The film is good in parts, but has the odds heavily stacked against it.

The script goes for a nose-dive after Vennila finds she is pregnant, and is shocked, since she's not had physical relationship with any of the guys. And then she realises that it was the past catching up with her, and it was a planned vendetta by Satish's dear ones. The director could have made the plan more convincing. The 'Test-tube-baby' style of vendetta cuts no ice here. It's too far-fetched, a bit ridiculous, and leaves it open to questions on a doctor's ethics.

He believes that capturing the dangerous and elusive underworld don, David Billa, will be the most EASIEST thing in the world. Billa's gang consist nobody, it's a one man gang!! During a chase with the police Billa is seriously wounded after an accident and dies in front of the DSP. The DSP then secretly holds a burying of Billa. Enters an Interpol Officer Gokulnath (Rahman) who is assigned to work with DSP Jayaprakash to capture elusive Billa as no-one knows of Billa's death. DSP Jayaprakash keeps the death of Billa as a secret even from his fellow officers, and tracks down a look-alike called Saravana Velu, a lowly pick-pocket(also played by Ajith Kumar). He asks Velu to infiltrate Billa's gang by pretending to be Billa. In return he will make sure that the child Velu adopted, Karan gets a proper education. The DSP trains Velu and sends him back to Billa's gang as a person who has lost his memory (Amnesia). Slowly Velu starts to learn about Billa's Gang and even speaks to Jagdish on the phone. Velu provides a pen drive with the secret information of the crime network to the DSP, but he is about to be killed by Sasha. At this juncture, DSP arrive and tell her that he is Velu and not Billa. Later Velu secretly provides information to the DSP about a meeting of Billa's Network and C.j overhears his conversation. He accidentally kills C.J. A shootout occurs at the party and the DSP is secretly killed by Jagdish, leaving his gun behind. Velu finds the DSP's body and the gun, but is taken into the custody of the police team, now headed by Interpol Officer Gokulnath. He argues during interrogation that he is Velu and not Billa to Gokulnath. Velu mentions a piece of evidence - the pen drive which may prove his innocence but the pen drive is no where to be found. Unable to prove is innocence, he escapes from a police van mnaking the police to run after him too. He phones to Gokulnath and ask him to meet at the Aero bridge. Here it is revealed that Gokulnath is none other than the Underworld Crime Don Jagdish and he is the one who killed Jayprakash. Officer Anil Menon apparently had the Pen drive all along and strikes a deal to get hold of Jagdish. Meanwhile Sasha is been kidnapped by Jagdish and Jagdish wants the pen drive in return for it. Velu meets Ranjith and gives him a second pen drive with the same data, but corrupted, but when Ranjith tries to kill Velu, a scuffle ensues making Ranjith fall from the top. In a final confrontation, Jagdish fights with Velu, by the time police arrives. Jagdish posing as Gokulnath asks the police to arrest Velu as Billa but gets shot by the squad of police and dies as the police have wired the entire conversation between Jagdish and Velu, thus proving his innocence. Velu finally hands over the original pen drive to Officer Menon

Review:
These days, most heroes don’t want to disappoint their core audience. They know their fans expect the usual package. Ajith is a smart man, he knows what his legion of followers need from him. And he has provided just that, even though for most part the film moves on a formulaic pattern. If that is what is going work at the box-office who is to complain.Coming after his big success in Varalaru, Ajith looks confidence personified and delivers his usual punch with poise. Ajith also looks ease and elegance. The usual package of action, comedy, sentiments and other attendant things that an average film-goer looks for is present here too.The story is the metamorphosis of a simple, straight as rod, Aalwar into an avenging machine named Shiva. Why Aalwar ends up as Shiva? Well, Aalwar is a traditional priest. He is devoted his mom and sister. But the villainous elements ---- Lal, Vincent Asokan, take out the sister and mother. If this is not reason enough for Aalwar’s blood to boil, then what is? Aalwar, with revenge ringing in his mind, ends up as Shiva the killer, even while working as a ward boy in a hospital.Shiva is out to make a statement against the venal forces. He sees himself as some kind of avatar —in fact, he bumps off the baddies under the guise of Godly elements. At denouement, Shiva turns up as Narasimha. Shiva says theat he is indeed the God.Woven into this simple masala story is the love angle with Asin. Then there is also the comedy of Vivek, which is indeed hilarious at places.Ajith’s character has not much confusion and delivers it with his usual aplomb. His intensity while dealing with the baddies is very real and absorbing. Asin is full of panache and shows her usual chirpiness. Vivek is back in his element and the comedy tracks carry his usual spark and spunk.

Review:
It is a love triangle with the first part set in an urban college ambience, and the second half shifting to the village. Priya (Jyotika) falls for Raja from the neighbouring college and uses Priya Mahalakshmi her college-mate (Priyanka Trivedi) who happens to be Raja's neighbour. But the confusion in the names of the two girls, and the confused way in which the shy, timid Mahalakshmi delivers the message, makes Raja mistakenly think that Mahalakshmi loved him, and he woos the girl aggressively. But before the matter can reach a conclusion, Mahalakshmi meets a violent end at the hands of a college rowdy and villain Bhavani (Sonu). Bhavani who does what all college rowdies do in our films - eve-teasing, molesting, kidnapping and generally making a nuisance of themselves - turns his attention on Mahalakshmi and she becomes a victim of his vengeance against Raja.
Since it is the same villain who is the common enemy for all the lead characters in the film, it is now Priya's turn to be harassed by Bhavani. Being forced into an unwanted marriage with him, Priya runs away from home, and takes refuge with Raja at his village house, passing herself as a girl in distress. Raja, of course, having never seen her before is oblivious of her feelings for him and her motive in entering his house. And even after she comes out with her story of her one-sided love for him, the grieving hero is reluctant to reciprocate. But all that changes when Bhavani re-enters the scene. Bhavani forces his attention on Priya and Raja is now forced to do the rescue act. Needless to add, the duo get back together."Raja" boasts of a handsome star cast, but it's hardly enough to salvage the film. Looks-wise Priyanka Trivedi may not quite be one's idea of a naive, orthodox Brahmin girl with the nickname of 'Thayir Saadam' in the film (reminds you of Abitha's role in 'Sethu'). But her fast changing expressions are delightful. Jyotika has never looked so glamorous and so good. Arvind's camera has caught her very flatteringly. In his earlier films Ajit played the lover-boy and then switched over to action and 'rowdy' roles in his recent films. That didn't work out either, and with 'Raja' Ajit is back to the college-campus and romance. But if the script is uninspiring and mediocre, and the narration lackadaisical, there's not much a hero can do, whether he's playing a lover-boy or a rowdy!
