Plot:
The story of 'Unnal Mudiyum Thambi' revolves around the clash of Bilahari Marthandam Pillai (Gemini Ganesan), a renowned classical singer and his son Udayamurthy (Kamalahaasan). Udayamurthy, a great singer himself, has a high level of social awareness and is constantly at logger heads with his father. While the father believes that music is the supreme soul-cleanser, the son believes that service to humanity is the greater purpose. He meets Kamalam (Seetha), a girl of a lower caste. He is drawn by her different approach to life and falls in love with her, but his father does not accept her as she is of an inferior caste. After a showdown, and Marthandam Pillai challenges his son, to make a name for himself in the society, without using his name. Udayamurthy, leaves home, and ends up in a village. He works hard to rid the village of alcoholism and child labor, and creates a model self-governance, but by sacrificing his personal desires in the process.
