Plot:
"Parasakthi" narrates the misfortunes that befall the members of a Tamil family. The youngest sister gets widowed and becomes the victim of an attempted rape by a temple priest. Sivaji Ganesan's character becomes insane.

Little needs to be said about the film that launched Sivaji's career, alongwith Karunanidhi's. After almost 50 years, it is as powerful as ever, thanks to Sivaji's brilliant portrayal of the Burma-returned Gunasekaran and the dialogues (who can forget the courtroom scene). Though long drawn out and sagging at times, it remains a classic for all times

Padikkatha Methai would be another milestone for many artist, including Sivaji Ganesan, S.V.Ranga Rao & KVMahadevan. This is a film unique in some ways. There were far too many stars-all great stars, and again there were many singers in this film. The song was another plus point for Kannadasan himself. TMS sings this song: Ullatha Cholven sonnatha Seiven Veronnum Theriyathu Ullathil Irukkum Vaarthayai maraikkum Kabadam Puriyaathu MS Rajeswary sings this solo that became the talk of both the literate and the illiterate for the analogy used. Padikkatha Methai was the affectionate name of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Kamaraj at that time. It was later that KarmaVeerar came to be used. In this song there is an anology that has been metaphorically composed, to justify Kamarajar’s illiteracy, of course, suiting Sivaji Ganesan too in the film. Kannadasan beautifully writes these songs.
“Padithathinaal Arivu Petror Aayiram Undu- Paadam Padikkatha Methaikalum Paarinil UNdu.”
“vaazhai Maram Padithathillai-Kani Kodukka Maranthathaa? Vaan Mugilum katrathillai-Mazhai kodukka maranthathaa? Solai Ellam katrathillai-Kani Kodukka Maranthathaa-Enrum Suthanthiramaai Padivarum Kuyilum Padam Padithathaa?

Plot:
Akkamappettai Paramasivan Nagarajan (AP Nagarajan) came into direct contact with Sivaji Ganesan when he wrote the story and dialogues of ‘naan petRa selvam’ (1956). Sivaji’s disenchantment with the DMK had begun by then, and besides being impressed with APN’s writing skills, Sivaji found in APN a trusted sympathizer and a good friend. In the following year, APN joined hands with actor V.K.Ramaswami and floated a production company called ‘Sri Lakshmi Pictures’. The first project of this company was a simple rural subject titled ‘MakkaLai PetRa Maharasi’. K.Somu, who had directed APN’s earlier ventures like maangalyam, town bus and naan petRa selvam, was appointed the director for this movie.
A village in Coimbatore district. Sengodan is a naïve good-hearted farmer, who knows no other God other than his mother Angamma. Staying back in the hamlet and tilling his land, he sends his beloved sister Thangam to the college in the town. Angamma’s brother is an avaricious landowner in the same village. The two families are not is speaking terms ever since Angamma’s husband ran away unable to meet the unreasonable demands of his brother-in-law after having borrowed some money from him. Kannan, the villain’s son, however does not inherit his father’s wily characteristics. Studying in the same college, Kannan and Thangam fall in love with each other. The storm which breaks out when the warring families become aware of their love and the how the lovers unite finally fill rest of the reels. In the midst of these chaotic proceedings APN inserted another love story- between the brave and mischievous belle Rangamma and the shy Sengodan.

Sivaji Ganesan was, of course, the natural choice to play Sengodan. Speaking simple conversational dialogues in the rustic Coimbatore dialect was a refreshing change to the actor who had been spewing fiery lines in chaste Tamil replete with flowery flourishes all along. Bhanumati played the assertive Rangamma. Kannamba played the dignified matriarch and M.N.Rajam was Thangam. V.K.Ramaswami played the villainous landowner and M.N.Nambiar was the surprise choice for the gentle Kannan. K.Sarangapani, P.D.Sambandham and T.P. Muthulakshmi were the supporting actors.

K.V.Mahadevan was APN’s favourite music director and he came up with a real winner in makkaLai petRa maharasi. The first among equals is the immortal tiller’s anthem ‘maNapaaRai maadu katti’ sung by TMS where Maruthakasi flaunts the specialized attractions of every nook of the Tamil countryside in a solicitous sermon to an aspiring farmer. ‘ondRu sErndha anbu maaRumaa’ is a duet of timeless allure by PBS and ‘udutha’ Sarojini. Not many new generation will know that this beautiful duet song is for MN Nambiar. ‘makkaLai petRa maharasi’ (Jikki), ‘O malliyakka O rOjakka’ (Jikki, Jamunarani & chorus), ‘adi tharapuram thambaram un thalaiyilE kanakambaram’ (S.C.Krishnan & Ratnamala) are the other unforgettable numbers, all set to enjoyable folksy tunes.

Bhanumati had 3 songs in the movie. Listen first to ‘sonna pEchcha kEkkaNum’. The bubbly farm lass Rangamma sings while herding her cattle, and admonishes them to pay heed to her words and tread with caution and confidence. Bhanumati makes merry, interspersing her soliloquy with stern calls of reprimand to those members of her flock who dare to stray. A veritable village feast!

Next is the appealing ‘vandhadhu yaarunnu sonna theriyuma’. Sengodan has just left after a brief visit to her house, and Rangamma is filled with rapture at the sight of the man whom she is destined to wed. Having no one to share her thrill with, she runs to her bovine friends in the backyard and gives them the exciting tidings of the momentous visit. Bhanumati’s song is full of the frivolous sweet nothings that a young girl in love would be prone to indulge in. Hark at Bhanumati mimicking Sivaji in between! Could anyone but her could have got away with such audacity?

Plot:
The story is ofcourse familiar to all of us. Queen Kunti abandons her first-born,who is then adopted by a charioteer Adhirathan and named Karnan by a sage. Karnanis known for his generosity and never says 'No' to anyone asking him for something. When he is insulted at a public archery competition for being from a lowly class,Duryodhana(Asokan) makes him king of one of his lands and embraces him as a friend. He is eternally grateful for this and chooses to fight on Duryodhana's side againstthe Pandavas even when Kunti reveals herself to be his mother and he realises that the Pandavas are his brothers.

Karnan is the kind of character that makes for a fascinating movie and this moviedoes full justice to it. With his generosity and undying loyalty to his friend, Karnan is a great character and the movie succeeds in making us admire him though he was on the wrong side. The incident when Karnan as a baby hands over his jewelleryto the sage wishing to cuddle him is very cute apart from telling us that his magnanimity was inborn. This characteristic ofcourse is the focus of the film withseveral instances to highlight it. The scene where he gives a disguised Indranwhat he asks for inspite of knowing his real identity and being warned against itmakes us respect him.

With focus on Karnan, several of the key events familiar to us from the Mahabharat are either not seen or are mentioned just in passing. Whether this is due to timeconstraints or the fact that such events show some the characters in a bad lightis not clear. For instance, Duryodhana is portrayed as a true friend to whom thethought of Karnan misbehaving with his wife never arises. But the game of dice, definitely Duryodhana's worst moment, is never shown. It might have been interesting to see Karnan's reaction to this event.

As in most movies during those times, the dialogs are strong and clever. Karnan'smeeting with Kunti and his challenge to his father-in-law who forbids his daughterto live with Karnan after learning about his lineage are two scenes which featurenice dialogs.

Karnan's end moves us to tears. The way Dharma Dhevadhai transforms the arrows intendedfor him to garlands and her lament about losing her only son illustrate Karnan'sgreatness. As Krishna lists out to Arjuna all the factors that were in place beforeKarnan could be killed, we realise what a great warrior he was. The success ofthe characterization is evident from the fact that we dislike Karnan's enemieslike Krishna and their tactics. We genuinely feel sorry for Karnan and his dilemmawhen Kunti asks for her two boons.

N.T.Ramarao is the perfect choice for Krishna and he brings out the playfulness ofKrishna with the twinkle in his eyes. But he is also suitably serious during theGitopadhesam and when explaining to Arjuna the reasons behind Karnan's death. Devika, as Karnan's wife and Savitri as Duryodhana's wife have quite importantroles while Muthuraman's Arjuna is sidelined. The first half definitely has a little too many songs with the two songs, one when Savitri sends Devika to herparents' home and one after she comes back, being too close to each other. Iravum Nilavum... is one of the melodious ones. Ullathil Nalla Ullam...is ofcourse a classic and loaded with meaningful lyrics.
