Superstar - Rajini Kanth in 3D animation movie - "Sultan - The Warrior"
He's no ordinary outlawed Robin Hood or swashbuckling musketeer wielding a glistening sword. As he somersaults from a high-rise dome to safe land on the ground, to single-handedly vanquish a group of soldiers, you wonder, how many more such breathtaking stunts can Tamil super star Rajnikant do?
While the camera does a theatrical sweep around his larger-than-life figure standing amidst ruins in a nowhere land, you cannot miss a rudraksh around his neck. Is there any significance behind the rudraksh?
Yes, and the rudraksh mystery will be answered when the US $10 million dollar 3D animation feature, 'Sultan the Warrior' featuring Rajnikanth hits the screens in the end of 2008.
At the screening of the one-and-half minute trailer of the film, at Chennai's INOX theatre, on Jan 13, Rajnikant's daughter, 23-year-old debutant director Soundarya revealed a few bits of information about the film.
Dedicated to her father, 'Sultan the Warrior' will be more than true to Rajnikant's 70 mm dramatic persona. "My father's mannerisms and gestures will be magnified hundred times more because we don't face any restrictions in an animation film," she said.
Rajni's trademark punch lines delivered with a lazy drawl, the majestic walk and the punches are all there to bring on shrieks of 'once-more' appeals from his loyal fans. The film has all the usual ingredients of a success story - packed with four full-length songs, a villain, comedian and all that makes up a Rajnikanth film, Soundarya promised.
A diehard fan of her father, Soundarya has herself penned the film's story and screenplay. "The movie is not a Mahabharata or a Ramayana. It's my own story. It is a fresh script," she revealed. The heroine, like the rest of the cast, will be fictitious characters.
To disclose anything more would affect the privacy of the project, her mother, Latha Rajnikanth, intervened and effectively ended further questioning on the storyline.
'Sultan...', produced by Adlabs, is being executed at Soundarya's post-production and animation studio, Ocher Studios, in Chennai. At the trailer screening, she was, however, defensive about outsourcing some work for 'Sultan...' to Europe.
"I had to go abroad for parts of the film because certain technology and manpower is not available in India," she said. But, 80 percent of the film's work will be done in Chennai.
The film that's to be dubbed in 12 different world languages, including Japanese, boasts big names like A R Rahman, Thota Tharani, Vairamuthu and an international singer (to be revealed later).
The film, currently in active production, has the total backing and support of her father. "He was initially skeptical but now he is very proud of me," said the visibly excited Soundarya, clad in a black T-shirt with the Ocher logo.
Having studied multi-media in Perth, Australia, Soundarya hopes to move to directing commercial films. And yes, Rajnikanth's pretty daughter prefers to stay behind the camera.
Earlier, while revealing details about the film's story, Soundarya confessed that the rudraksh worn by the charming warrior Sultan in the film did have a meaning.
"There is a reason why he wears it and that will unfold in the film," she said mysteriously. That's 'cool', as Rajni would say!
