Ajith Kumar - Billa 2007 - Official Trailer

Ajith Kumar - Billa 2007 - Official Trailer

Billa, is a Tamil language film directed by Vishnuvardhan, is a remake of the blockbuster 1981 film, Billa, though it borrows its key theme from the re-vamped Don starring Shahrukh Khan. The film is set to be released in India on December 12, 2007 and is set to be simultaneously released internationally.

The film stars Ajith Kumar, Nayanthara, Prabhu Ganesan, Rahman, Namitha and Rose Dawn in a guest appearance. 80% of the movie was shot in Malaysia, and was filmed around the tropical Langkawi island as well as the towering Petronas Twin Towers and the Jalan Masjid India area, which is the 'little India' of Kuala Lumpur.

Official Trailer

Plot

In 2007, the drug trade is booming. The Malaysian Intelligence and Anti-Narcotic Department are called upon for assistance by their Indian counterparts. There are rumours that a drug gang has recently moved their headquarters to Kuala Lumpur.

The Indian team is headed by the DCP (Rahman) who wants to break the back of the drug operations of a drug lord. He believes that capturing the drug Lord's dangerous and elusive lieutenant, Billa, (Ajith Kumar), will be the most effective way of accomplishing this. Billa's gang consist of Narang (Santhanam) and Anita (Namitha). Soon, Roma (Nayanthara) joins them but she has other plans - kill Billa. Billa was responsible for killing her brother Ramesh as well as his fiancee, Kamini.

During a chase with the police the real Billa is critically injured and is captured by the DSP. He keeps it a secret that he has captured Billa, even from his fellow officers, and tracks down a look-alike called Jeeva, a lowly singer (also played by Ajith Kumar). He asks Jeeva to infiltrate Billa's gang by pretending to be Billa. In return he will make sure that the child Jeeva found and adopted, Deepu gets a proper education. Meanwhile Jasjit who has just been released from prison sets out in search for his son, Deepu, and to get his revenge on the DSP who arrested him and prevented him from rescuing his wife and child from black mailers, this in turn killed his wife and left his son missing.

The DSP[1] trains Jeeva and admits him in a hospital (in which Billa is also admitted and supposedly in coma) to surgically give him all the scars and birthmarks the real Billa has on his body. However Billa dies of heart failure suddenly in front of the DSP and the doctors, who are unable to save him. While Jeeva is infiltrating Billa's gang, the DSP is captured and killed in a fire blast; and Jeeva is forced to run from the police as well as Billa's gang members -- pursuing the last piece of evidence (a disc) which has all of Billa's criminal activities loaded on it, a disc which can get him out of this mess.

Through various plot twists, Jeeva recovers the disc. Eventually, it surfaces that the DSP is alive and is actually Vardhan, a notorious underground criminal with a grudge against the Drug Lord, Billa's boss, and eventually ends up killing him. Jeeva arranges a meeting with Vardhan and assists in his capture.

In a final twist, it emerges that the real Billa is still alive, and was pretending to be Jeeva who he killed and replaced while in the hospital. It was actually Jeeva who had died in the hospital of heart failure in front of Vardhan. In the end both Billa and his girlfriend Anita (Namitha) escape, bewildering the police and Roma.

Review:
Eswaran (Jeeva) alias E an orphan is a slum dweller in Chennai. He is supported by an old lady. E along with his friend Tony (Karunas) carries out small crimes to earn money. E brought up in tough conditions, grows up as a tough, fearless and emotionless guy.

Jyoti (Nayanthara), a bar dancer from Mumbai comes to Chennai and stays in a house opposite to E's. As days go by, Jyoti learns about E's past. She gets attracted towards E.

Meanwhile; Dr.Ramakrishnan (Ashish Vidyarthi) a quack comes to the slum and projects himself as a do-gooder to people living there. Not knowing his ulterior motives, the slum dwellers keep unshakable faith on him. However, his hidden agenda is to make use of them as guinea pigs to test his new but potentially lethal medicines, which international pharmaceutical companies supply to him for a hefty sum.

One day, Jyoti's sister and E's grand mother go to Dr.Ramakrishnan for treatment. Both fall prey to his insidious action. In the meantime, E saves Dr.Ramakrishnan from Nellai Mani (Pasupathy), a terrorist, who is after the Doctor to kill him.

Realizing E's boldness the Doctor enters into a pact with E to capture Mani in return for a huge sum. E captures Mani and when he takes him to handover him to the doctor. Mani tells about Ramakrishna's evil designs. The rest of the film is about how E foils the doctor's malicious actions and brings him to books.

With each film Jeeva is getting better and better and his performance in "E" is exceptional. He is aptly supported Nayanthara. Her looks are ravishing and has performed well too.

The ensemble of support cast has given a very realistic performance. The director should be credited for chosen a complex issue- plaguing the country today- and portraying it in a simple way that even a common man understands. His sharp screenplay and simple narration makes it simple.

Review:

Very rarely we come across realistic portrayals in Tamil cinema. Some filmmakers do deal with various shades of life but more often than not they indulge in diluting the reality in their pursuit to ensure commercial success. Some directors, however, achieved the rare combination of undiluted reality meeting with commercial success. Debutant director Vettrimaran’s ‘Polladhavan’ has all potential to become one such attempt. The movie opens with a gruesome fight involving Dhanush. The movie revolves around a clash between a person belonging to mafia and an innocent lower middle class boy. The narrative moves on in a non linier manner with the two narrating the story from their respective angles. No, please don’t get it wrong. It is not Akira Kurosawa’s Roshoman like narrative where in you get different perceptions on a single event. In ‘Polladhavan’, the narration is shared by two characters. Prabhu (Dhanush) who has just now brutally attacked three thugs with a sword comes out of the building and rests his wounded body on his beloved bike. He is now heading towards meeting his praise catch that is Ravi (Danial Balaji), the younger brother of all powerful mafia leader of North Chennai Selvam (Kishor Kumar). He recalls, for a moment, what that bike has brought to him before moving ahead for his hunt. The flash back shows the happy-go-lucky boy longing for a Pulsar bike. It goes to show the life in a North Chennai street where life is quite difference from that of South Chennai. The boys are playing carom board on the street. Prabhu is sharing the pain of his failure to get what he loves most - a bike and a girl. The narration shows the status of Prabhu’s family. The father is the breadwinner of the lower middle class family and the boy, a jobless graduate, is roaming around without responsibility. When caught red-handed for stealing pittance from his father for booze with his friends, Dhanush questions his father’s responsibility towards his upbringing. The father feels humiliated and reacts sharply by arranging 70,000 rupees through his hard earned savings. He gives the money to his son and asks him to do something on his own. The boy immediately gets one of wishes fulfilled. He gets a bike. His family is stunned. But Prabhu is determined to get a job, and fortunately he gets one with the help of his bike. He joins as a loan officer in a bank. His other passion – to woo a girl (Divya Spandana) he meets in the bus stand for more than two years – too gets fulfilled. Prabhu is the happiest person on the earth. He has got a bike, got a girlfriend, and a decent job. Everything gets terribly disturbed when everything seems to be well. There is another world beneath the surface. There is a mafia gang that deals with drug trafficking and various other anti social activities. Selvam is the leader of the all powerful gang. The gang has its own complications. The younger brother Ravi of the leader is not happy with the way he is treated. He is full of jealous and anger on a gangster named ‘Out’ (Bhavan), who is the trusted lieutenant of Selvam. The leader is not supporting his brother doubting his talent. Ravi’s grudge against his brother and out grows stronger day by day. Prabhu has a tryst with underworld when his bike gets stolen in a spot where a brutal murder takes place. Dhanush is shattered. He wants his bike back at any cost. Unfortunately, he gets to lock horns with the underworld criminals in his pursuit to find his bike. He gets into dangerous zone but his blind passion towards his bike pushes him forward. This put his and his family’s life in danger. His love is in danger. The inner conflict within the underworld makes his condition worse. He is in for trouble. Big trouble indeed. Does he get back his bike and love? Could he save is family from the brutal gang? Director Vettrimaran has come out with an engrossing and realistic experience on celluloid. Making films based on the lives of underworld is not new but making it with amazing reality is. Though the movie resembles Selvaraghavan’s ‘Puduppettai’, it maintains its individuality by sticking to a well crafted script and stylish execution. Director and his team have done their home work neatly. They have captured the dialects, mannerisms, and life style of the underworld mafia group with precision. The film has also unearthed some hitherto unexplored areas like bike theft network. He has also illustrated the functions of a modern banking network well. The characterization too is worth mentioning. Especially the character of Selvam. The nuances of father-son relationship too have been portrayed well. Well done Vettrimaran! R. Velraj, the cameraman, deserves special mention. He has worked wonders in capturing the gruesome reality of the underworld. The lighting in various time spaces is wonderful. The picturisation of climax fight is outstanding. As far as the script is concerned, the compactness is marred by two songs. One is the marriage song and another one is the item song. The love track too is weak. Portraying an innocent, turning into a warrior is a cakewalk for Dhanush. He has done it in the past and does it here with amazing ease. He has credibly depicted the transformation within the character. Daniel Balaji, Bhavan, and Kishor Kumar have brought the underworld with all its colors and shades with astonishing perfection. They all have lived up to the expectations of the director and have added credibility to the reality f the movie. Though Divya doesn’t get any scope to act, she looks pretty and adds glamour to the fare. Her pleasant looks serve as balancing factor to the otherwise gruesome movie. Karunas has rendered a commendable performance as an auto rickshaw driver, who helps Dhanush in his endeavors. His dialogue delivery and expressions are amazing. Santhanam, as usual, plays the friend of the hero and gives comical relief. Murali and Bhanupriya as Dhanush’s parents have done their parts well. They together flawlessly portray a lower middle class family. Young music director G.V. Prakash has done wonders. The songs, which are already rocking, are well picturised. The remix version of ‘Engeyum Eppothum’ stands out. One wonders how SPB has maintained the sweetness of his voice for so many years. Yogi B, the sensational Malaysian singer is a revelation. ‘Minnalgaley’ sung by Karthik and Bombay Jayashree is a soothing melody. The background score adds value to the entire proceedings.

Review:

A fast- paced movie with hits, chases and the right mix of romance and humour is Gilli. Director Dharani, known for such movies, has come out with a three- hour entertainer by having actor Vijay single- handedly take on an influential gang and save a girl (Trisha) from their clutches. A good screenplay with peppy numbers has made the movie interesting.

Though there is nothing new about the story, Gilli is about a one-man army fighting the villain. After his Dhil and Dhool with Vikram in the lead role, Dharani has churned out this remake of the Telugu blockbuster Okkadu.

Vijay in GilliWith a huge starcast and grand sets, the movie takes many twists and turns. In between all this, is the aspect of humour and romance. With these ingredients, Dharani has given a sumptuous treat for Vijay's fans.

Vijay, son of a police officer played by Ashish Vidyarthi, is a happy-go-lucky youngster who spends most of his time playing kabbadi with friends. While going for a tournament in Madurai, he comes across Trisha, who is being tortured and kidnapped by an influential landlord Prakashraj, son of a State Minister. Prakashraj wants Trisha to marry him by threatening her.Vijay steps in to save her. After a tiresome chase, he manages to reach Chennai with Trisha.

Meanwhile, Prakashraj follows him to the city and zeroes in on Vijay and Trisha. However, Vijay manages to procure passports and visas for Trisha and sends her to USA. Only after leaving her in the airport, he realises that he had fallen in love with her.

The rest of the story revolves around how Vijay takes on Prakashraj and finally manages to win Trisha's love. The role in this film has been easy for Vijay. He is at his best in stunt and chase sequences. He has tried his hand at comedy too. Trisha looks convincing yet at many places appears deadpan while Prakashraj steals the show with his histrionics. However, towards the climax, he seems to have overacted.

The tunes are by Vidyasagar. Yet in the re-recording , he could have avoided a few jarring notes. The movie also has Dhamu, Nagendra Prasad, Mayilsamy, Chaplin Balu and Jennifer.

Review:
Billu (Jayam Ravi) is the son of Mudaliar (Vijay Kumar). Mudaliar is much loved and respected by people of his locality and Billu is almost like a foster son to every person in the locality. Billu takes an instant liking for Susi (Bhavana) the moment he sets his eyes on her at the railway station. Susi, who has arrived from Bangalore to Chennai, is all set to stay at Sait’s (VMC Haneefa) place and Sait, who has worked for Susi’s father Chidambaram (Lal), a dreaded thug, earlier, has changed ways but retains his respect towards him nevertheless. Susi, who has been craving for love and concern since young, gets impressed with the bonding that the Royapuram residents share. Love blooms between Susi and Billu, and just when they share a light moment with Billu’s friends, the unexpected occurs.

Susi acts peculiar when a long lost friend meets her at a restaurant. She denies knowing her despite her friend Revathi’s attempts to talk to her. Feeling insulted, Revathi walks away, much to the dismay and confusion of Billu and his friends. Susi, who gets emotionally high-strung, leaves the restaurant in a jiffy too.

Susi, at this juncture, comes out with the truth to Billu. Affected with a condition called ‘post traumatic event amnesia’ after an accident, Susi has forgotten events that happened in a span of three years. Billu, who takes her to the doctor (Raghuvaran), learns that this condition can be cured, but when she does get cured, Susi will not be in a position to remember whatever happened and whoever she met at Chennai-Billu included.

This disheartens Susi to a major extent and she persuades Billu to promise her that he would never leave her, even if she were to forget him due to her condition. Billu promises her that he would never leave her, come whatever may.In a turn of events, Chidambaram, Susi’s father, thrashes Billu after making him arrive at a place far from his locality, at the outskirts. The helpless Susi travels along with her father, escorted by his men, to Bangalore.

When Billu meets Susi at her residence, he gets nothing less than shocked as she has been cured and she fails to recognize him. But Billu, who had given a word to his beloved that he would never leave her, is not the one to give up. How he tries relentlessly to convince her and what happens with Susi forms the rest of the story.

Since most part of the story is set in and around Royapuram, the slang has been given prominence and the lead artistes like Jayam Ravi and Vijay Kumar, have rendered the dialogues in the ‘Madras’ slang effortlessly. The gaana song that appears when Billu and Susi travel in the fishing boat deserves special mention. It is well received by the audiences.

It should be mentioned that there is heightened excitement in the theatres when Raghuvaran makes his appearance. The seasoned actor that he is, he has done his role with élan. Welcome back Raghuvaran-we are glad to have you back!

The songs, especially Kannan Varum Velai, Pogathae and Kadhal Vaithu are not just worth listening to, they have also been picturised well. The picturisation of ‘Thoduvaen’ disappoints though. Yuvan proves his mettle in the re-recording and it is particularly good in the scene in which Billu and Susi play Holi along with the residents of the area, the scene in the terrace when Susi tells Billu about her plight and the action sequences. On the flip side, the director could have had a comedy track, as the film seems to move on a serious note in most of the places.

Cinematography by Vijay Milton and editing by Sasi Kumar are good and they complement the film’s storyline to a good extent. Stunts by Kanal Kannan are remarkable. With a good plot and interesting sequence of events interwoven around it, Ezhil has proved that he is no flash in the pan.

We also wish Lingusamy continues to give us good films from his banner.

Cast: Prithviraj, Prakash Raj, Jyothika, Swarnamalya, Brahmanadam, M. S. Bhaskar
Direction: Radha Mohan
Production: Prakash Raj
Music: Vidyasagar

Review:
Mozhi is a musical love story. It is the light hearted and at the same time, intense portrayal of love between a musician and a deaf and dumb girl. Karthik (Prithviraj) and Viji (Prakash Raj) are musicians who work in the dream factory. They are keyboard players who live and love music. They exhibit an infectious enthusiasm and enjoy life the way it is.

It is at this juncture that Karthik chances upon Archana (Jyothika), and she happens to live in the same apartment as Viji and Karthik. Karthik looks up to this woman with awe for her sheer courage, as she takes on a man who bashes his wife in the middle of the road. Karthik realizes that she could just be the one that he has been waiting for all his life.

Karthik soon understands that Archana is a deaf and dumb woman and while Viji is full of misgivings about the relationship blooming into love, Karthik is confident and in fact, decides that Archana is the one for him.

Karthik gets acquainted with Archana’s friend Sheela (Swarnamalya) and starts learning sign language from her. He starts communicating with Archana using the sign language. We also get an insight into what a headstrong character Archana is. She is a self-dependant and outgoing woman.

The story then borders on the smiles, tears, emotional turmoil and contagious laughter of the foursome all the way till the climax.Jyothika as Archana steals the show. Not surprising, because with every film of hers, we have seen myriad shades of her performance and they have showed us what a seasoned performer she is. She is deaf, she is mute. But she makes all of us talk volumes about her performance, just the way one did after watching Vikram in Pithamagan. She is absolutely credible as the obstinate and confident young woman.

Prithviraj as Karthik and Prakash Raj as Viji provide us with rib-tickling humour and wit here is not thrust or deliberate. It is an undercurrent in all their conversations and they score in performance as well.

Swarnamalya for Sheela is an apt choice. She has understood her character with amazing clarity and has got into the skin of it. She has done her role with ease and élan.

Brahmanandam as the menacing neighbour and MS Bhaskar as the professor are absolutely brilliant. MS Bhaskar, who had lost his memory due to the untimely loss of his son, lives in the same apartment as Archana and Karthik. His poignant portrayal and subtle performance definitely calls for appreciation.

he dialogue writer Viji has done a remarkable job. Every syllable in his dialogues is sensitive and sensible. He has blended sparkling wit and subtle strength in his dialogues which is definitely a high-point of the film. If for most of the time, the audience in the theatre is in splits, it is definitely due to him. Kudos to Viji for a job well-done!

Vidyasagar is absolutely commendable. For a story which borders on music, Vidyasagar has given just the right feel and emotion. His music is smooth and is never loud or distracting anywhere.

KV Guhan’s cinematography and Kasi Viswanathan’s editing are neat and are of first-rate. Art director Kathir has lent creative touches with brilliant sets which strike a chord in the viewers’ minds. His sensitive set in the form of Jyothika’s room deserves mention.

Radha Mohan has given us clean entertainers like Azhagiya Theeye and Ponniyin Selvan before. With this film, he has joined the bandwagon of directors who remain uncompromising on quality. His screenplay is taut. Subtle directorial touches in the form of the bulbs burning bright when Karthik sees Archana and when Viji takes a liking for Sheela are exemplary. Mention can also be made of the gift Archana gives to Karthik (a violin made of soap), the musical clock, Archana being able to feel music by keeping her hands on the speakers, and the delicate humour that sneaks up when a neighbour (Neelima Rani) takes a liking for Karthik. Such nuances have made the film more interesting.

Review:
Honesty and uprightness take on villainy and vendetta in Kanakaratna Movies’ Nam Naadu — a drama that’s more a proclamation of Sarathkumar’s solo entry into politics. More a remake of the Malayalam film, Lion, it’s a near-perfect platform for Sarathkumar to showcase himself in the right mould. A film hero is always a do-gooder. And if he’s a politician he is even more conscientious. Though Nam Naadu has the essential ingredients of an entertainer — action, sentiment and romance — it fails to keep you hooked till the end because the heroic element comes to the fore rather late. At times you see the hero bargaining with the avaricious and at others he is too straightforward. Naturally, it’s confusing.

Being the son of a corrupt State Minister (Nasser), Muthazhagan (Sarathkumar) is the odd one out in his home. His two brothers-in-law, who are top officials, are as corrupt as his father. And try as he might, breaking the nexus is impossible, till things get out of hand. Adding to his agony is his insensitive mom.

Sarathkumar, as the sedate, serious politician and minister, does justice to the role. Not much of emotions are called for or executed. He makes an impact when he’s unjustly accused by his own mother. Nasser steals the show. Knowing the risk his life is in, it’s surprising Nasser goes out alone only to become a sitting duck for his opponents!

Ramesh Kanna (also the dialogue writer of Nam Naadu) plays the clichéd role of the minister’s secretary; yet manages to evoke a smile now and then. But his asides get a bit too much after a point. Karthika appears rather flabby, especially in the song sequences.

Thankfully the songs are well-spaced out and their number limited. The opening number ‘Kottaisami …’ is an extremely predictable sequence. Suresh’s screenplay sags towards the end but by and large it is a linear narration.

Though released in a hurry, it’s to the credit of director Suresh that the simmering stress is seen nowhere in Nam Naadu. On the whole, a political story that promises fireworks and high drama.

Review:
Writer-Director Gautham Menon, who single handedly, generated our fascination for his films characteristic of style and substance, has made another fabulous film Pachchaikili Muthucharam.

It is a beautifully crafted tale of romance, treachery, struggle, intrigue and action. What makes this movie resounding is its social relevance. Many incidents in this movie make you feel that you can also get caught in the web of deceit. The movie, punctuated by shimmering images, electric visuals, and vibrant directorial fireworks, promises complete entertainment worth the time you expend sitting in the theater.

Here goes the story...

Set in the backdrop of a suburban area near Chennai, it tells the story of Venkatesh (Sarath Kumar), a medical representative. He settles down to a cozy domestic life with his wife Kalyani (Andrea) and a six-year-old son Nanda. With no big desires, demands or needs, Venkatesh maintains his status quo by doing his 9 to 5 job with complete satisfaction.

His happy life takes a jerk when his son is diagnosed for juvenile diabetics. Unable to bare the trauma, Kalyani finds it difficult to cope with the changed circumstances. Venkatesh tries hard to bring her to normalcy and explains her that life should go on notwithstanding the setbacks. However, gradually, their sparkling life looses its luster.

At this juncture Geeta (Jyothika) meets Venkatesh in a train and attracted by his gentleness and naivety, turns him into an object of desire. Things change dramatically when she brings Venkatesh to a resort and there starts a dangerous adventure. How Venkatesh comes out of the web is narrated interestingly in the remaining part of the movie.

Everyone in the cast deserves praise. Sarath has donned quite a variety of roles, including those of cops and wielder of power and authority, in his long acting career. But in his role in "Pachchaikili..." as a next-door-family-man Sarath Kumar has excelled. Nowhere, do you feel that he carries the lead man status and that is the testimony to his versatility.

Jyothika is terrific as ever, with her magical grip over every scene. Mumbai model Milind Suman, whom Gautham described as a "surprise find", in his very first film in Tamil, holds the audience enthralled with his menacing looks and free style acting.

Andrea is utterly persuasive as a housewife. She wonderfully sustains and enlivens the poignant drama. She makes most of her theater experience and what she brings to every scene with Venkatesh, tells you much of what you need to know about the best that can happen between a man and a woman.

Harris Jayaraj has rendered pleasant and skillful music, which adds fizz to the whole fare. Action choreographed by Stunt Siva is realistic.

The film may have a divided audience. Some of them can dismiss this movie as preposterous for its lengthy climax and at times dull situations. However, Pachchaikili Muthucharam with its evocative aura and warmly attractive look (with cinematography by Arvind Krishna), sustains the interest till the end, and lends itself to a debate on the moral issues it means to raise.

Summary:
Azhagu Sundaram (Dhanush) is a young village lad who is the only son of his parents. His mother (Archana) dotes on him. Azhagu's father dies of some disease and he moves to Chennai in search of a job.

Sequence of events leads to Azhagu Sundaram being re-christened as Parrattai and is forced to wield the knife. From an innocent youth from a rural area, he goes on to become a gangster. As ever, he is the don with the heart of gold, who commands respect from people around him.

Meanwhile Parattai's mother leaves her village in search of her son and comes to the city. Are they destined to meet each other? The search, the anticipation and the hope of the mother and son to find each other in the crowded city form the rest of the story.

Dhanush's performance deserves a mention. As Azhagu Sundaram and Parrattai, he is compelling and is full of conviction. His sincerity stands out, especially in the weak script. His character has shades of the lead role enacted by him in Pudhupettai. Giving him good company is Meera Jasmine. Bubbly and enthusiastic, Meera leaves her charm on screen.

Review:

Director Subramaniam Siva had rendered a racy entertainer in Thiruda Thirudi. Still to come out of the mode, the young director has dished out a commercial cocktail in Pori with Jeeva dominating all through.

After playing a few tough characters in the recent past, it is an easy outing for Jeeva, who has donned the role of a boy-next-door who has to toughen up due to circumstances. He amazes with his body language and his facial expressions. Jeeva has matured as an actor. Especially in the stunt sequences, he walks away with applause.

Giving him good company is Pooja. She has shaken her legs for pacy numbers, set to tunes by Dheena. The slim and cute-looking actor from Bangalore has played her part well as a TV journalist in the movie. Karunas as Jeeva's friend is adequate.

Walking away with all honors is Nagesh. He is cool and spontaneous on the screen. A seasoned veteran, he has stamped his class in the limited opportunity that he has got.

Director Seeman makes his foray into acting and has played his part well. Also, the cast includes Delhi Ganesh, T.P.Gajendran, 'Kadhal' Thandapani, Gana Ulaganathan, Seeman, Shanmugarajan and Lakshmanan. The movie revolves around Jeeva, who sells books in a small shop.

His father (Nagesh), a school teacher, on his retirement buys a building for Jeeva to run his bookstore. Enters a rich businessman from abroad (Seeman), claiming ownership for the property. Coming to know that they had been cheated by an influential gang, Jeeva sets on a mission to teach them a lesson.

A sequence of events helps Jeeva come to know the involvement of politicos. How he teaches all a lesson is the movie.

All credit goes to Subramaniam Siva for lacing the movie with good commercial elements. A mix of humour, romance and sentiment helps sustain the interest of the audience.

If his Thiruda Thiudi showed Dhanush as a way-ward youth, in Pori, Jeeva is portrayed as a responsible youth.

Dheena's music is foot-tapping. He has come up with catchy songs. He adds pace to the movie with his racy background score.

The movie is produced by P S Rajendran for Nivi Pavi Creations.

A commercial entertainer sure to make front-benchers happy.

Review:
Vishal has earned spurs as a kind of action hero with a rural tilt. Hari, on the other hand, has underscored his presence with movies suffused with Madurai – Tirunelveli - Tuticorin flavour.

So when such established forces have fused together a partnership, the movie is naturally a cross-pollination of action, sentiments and nativity.

Hari has worked out a crisp mix of brother-sister sentiment, big family intrigues and romantic interludes. Thamirabarani does create a new flavor.

For Vishal, who is looking to establish his own tradition in the market, Thamirabarani is a straight extension of what he did in his last three movies. Hari, as a director, is always conscious of his limitations. It should be said that their combination does create an impression.

The story is centred on Bharani (Vishal). This loud, angry young man, who doesn’t mind letting his fist fly furiously, is totally in awe of his uncle Salt Saravanan (Prabhu). Vishal and his mother (Rohini) live with Saravanan and his mother (Manorama). It is a family that is typical to most Tamil movies. The villagers just venerate this big family.

Pitted against them is the other big one ----PVS family (peopled by Nadhiya, Vijayakumar and Nasser). And then there is Banu (Banu). Bharani, as cinema rules mandate, loves Banu. In a sense, he has rights to marry Banu as we are told that Sakunthala (Nadhiya) is the estranged wife of Saravanan. The two had parted ways over Saravanan’s extreme fondness for his sister (Bharani’s mother).

It all builds towards a heightened climax as the two young lovers try to hammer out peace between the two families and principally between the at-war hubby and wife.

Hari has mixed all the ingredients so well in a smart storyline, so much so that you get a new flavour. Vishal is full of virility and his action sequences are bravado stuff. Newcomer Banu, a Nayanthara look-alike, does what is required of her. She looks a bit callow though. Veterans Prabhu and Nadhiya offer splendid backing to the script as it is their rivalry that is the fulcrum of the movie. Nasser, Vijayakumar and others do their job diligently.

Yuvan, though not in prime form, shows glimpses of his talent. The camera and other technical works are okay. The blazing and dusty streets, the sword swishes, the cavalcade of sumo’s and other SUVs, the dialogues of sibling love and big family ethos...you get it all in the film.

Hari has meticulously worked on the basis of his formula. Without a doubt, he has succeeded in executing it.

Plot:
The Britain-educated Shakti (Kamal Haasan), son of a village chieftain Periya-thevar (Sivaji Ganesan) returns home to his village after a long stay abroad. Accompanying Shakti is his girlfriend (Gouthami), with whom he intends to settle in a city and start a restaurant business. However, his father hopes he will don the patriarchal mantle, a role that the highly educated Shakti finds alien to him and distasteful primarily because of the bloody feud between factions aligned with his father and his paternal uncle, Chinna Thevar & his son, Maya Thevan. Violent confrontations between both sides leading to loss of lives and a humiliating Panchayat trial that leads to his father's death, forces Shakti to re-examine his initial judgment and adopt the patriarchal mantle that he initially despised.

Review:
These days, most heroes don’t want to disappoint their core audience. They know their fans expect the usual package. Ajith is a smart man, he knows what his legion of followers need from him. And he has provided just that, even though for most part the film moves on a formulaic pattern. If that is what is going work at the box-office who is to complain.

Coming after his big success in Varalaru, Ajith looks confidence personified and delivers his usual punch with poise. Ajith also looks ease and elegance. The usual package of action, comedy, sentiments and other attendant things that an average film-goer looks for is present here too.
The story is the metamorphosis of a simple, straight as rod, Aalwar into an avenging machine named Shiva. Why Aalwar ends up as Shiva? Well, Aalwar is a traditional priest. He is devoted his mom and sister. But the villainous elements ---- Lal, Vincent Asokan, take out the sister and mother.

If this is not reason enough for Aalwar’s blood to boil, then what is? Aalwar, with revenge ringing in his mind, ends up as Shiva the killer, even while working as a ward boy in a hospital.

Shiva is out to make a statement against the venal forces. He sees himself as some kind of avatar —in fact, he bumps off the baddies under the guise of Godly elements. At denouement, Shiva turns up as Narasimha. Shiva says theat he is indeed the God.

Woven into this simple masala story is the love angle with Asin. Then there is also the comedy of Vivek, which is indeed hilarious at places.Ajith’s character has not much confusion and delivers it with his usual aplomb. His intensity while dealing with the baddies is very real and absorbing. Asin is full of panache and shows her usual chirpiness. Vivek is back in his element and the comedy tracks carry his usual spark and spunk.

The music and camera are okay without doing anything extraordinary. The song could have been more imaginative and the same could have better captured.

The director has not tried anything fancy. He has set out with a simple plan ---- to no let down Ajith’‘s fans. That is what he has accomplished.

The entertainment sticks to the distilled formula. The violence maybe heavy at places. But overall, the movie’s cadences are well measured out.

Review:
Hari, one of the best commercial directors in Tamil, has lived up to the expectations in 'Vel'. He has presented a racy film that provides a perfect entertainer. The movie has action, sentiment, and romance. The script, which is compact, is well complemented by the performances. The two layered story unfolds nicely. The story opens with a family with a twin children losing one. The separated boys grow up in different environments. The one grows in Chennai becomes an officer (Vasudevan) in a private investigative agency and the other grows in Dindukkal becomes a typical rusty young man (Vetrivel).

The city bred Suriya charms RJ Asin through his professional ethics. Rusty Vel is engaged in the bloody tussle with Kalabhavan Mani, who has deep rooted enmity against the family. Vasu is full of brains and smile while Vel lives with sickle and dangerous duels.Vasu’s mother (Saranya) could not forget her lost son. She is longing to bring him back to her home. But she couldn’t find his whereabouts. The family, in which Vel lives, is so affectionate with him. Especially the grand mother (Lakshmi) is emotionally dependent on him.

RJ Asin accidentally finds Vel and informs Vasu. Vasu goes to the village and meets his brother. The family refuses to send Vel to his original family. Vasu, understanding their unadulterated affection towards Vel, agrees to give up his claim. But he has one request. Vel should go to Chennai pretending as Vasu and live with his mother. Vasu in turn would act as Vel in the village. Vel accepts.

Vasu continues Vel’s struggle against powerful Kalabhavan Mani but with a different approach. Vasu uses his brain and investigating network instead of muscle power. The rules of the game changes, and Mani finds himself cornered.

The movie goes on narrating fierce fight and sentimental drama between the two families over Vel.

Director Hari is known for his compact script and smart execution. Though he has proven his caliber in a few films life 'Samy', 'Vel' is easily his best film. It showcases his ability to create a racy entertainer. He has treaded in a safe path to make a commercially viable film by choosing a routine theme based on sentiment and action. But the treatment he has given to the story is commendable. You cannot single out a scene that is boring or redundant.

He has conceived and executed the action and romantic sequences equally well. The pace is ensured from the word go. The two dimensional climax – action and sentiment – is quite appealing.

For Suriya, the roles are not as challenging as the ones in 'Pithamagan', 'Gajini' or 'Perazhagan'. He gets routine roles but his handling makes them look special. He breathes fire as 'Vel' and spreads charm as Vasu. Though there is no much difference in the get ups, he has differentiated both roles by his body language and dialogue delivery. His action in emotional sequences is touching. His on screen chemistry with Asin clicks once again.

Asin doesn’t have much to perform but she does have her moments. The initial roles showcase her magical charm. She has handled her role with amazing ease and brilliance. She shows her caliber when she looks at her lover in the village house with admiration and love.

Kalabhavan Mani, as villain with comical traits, rocks. The man adds life to the proceedings by his inimitable style. Vadivelu’s comedy is simply amazing. The man is definitely one of the major assets of the film.

Saranya and Lakshmi do their parts well. Raj Kapoor as the uncle of Vel and Charlie as Vasu’s friend are competent.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is soothing to the ears. The songs sequences, however, are not among the pluses of the movie. In fact, songs do weaken the pace of the movie.

The bottomline: 'Vel' rocks with racy script and powerful performances. Surefire entertainer to brighten up the festival season.

Review:

‘Azhagiya Tamil Magan’ banks heavily on Vijay’s charm and performance. The Ilaya Thalapathy has lived up to the challenge created by the huge success of ‘Pokkiri’. He looks stylish and handsome. He lights up the screen by his dynamic performance.Director Bharathan has exploited Vijay’s strengths well. He has provided a perfect entertainer for Vijay fans by giving ample chance, including dual role, to Vijay to come up with a stylish, action packed, romantic heroism. Vijay plays both hero and villain. The first half is filled with romance and a mystery surrounding Vijay’s Extra Sensory Perception (ESP), while the second half is dominated by the tug of war between the two Vijays.

Let us first look at the storyline. Guru (Vijay) is an athlete and business management student. Abhinaya (Shreya) is the daughter of a business baron (Ashish Vidyarthi). They meet and, what else, fall in love. The movie goes on to show how the lovers manage to get the permission of the parents. In the meantime, you get to see a different dimension in the tale while the romantic drama is unfolding. Vijay visualizes some bizarre scenes inside his mind. The scenes are disturbing and worse, they become true in the real life.A psychiatrist (played by Dr. Rudran, a professional psychiatrist) confirms that it is ESP power and says that the imageries visualized by Guru would actually happen sooner or later. Unfortunately Guru visualizes another scene which he would never like to see happening. Sensing a danger to his sweetheart, he runs away to Mumbai from her to save her.

In Mumbai he stumbles upon a person, who looks alike himself. This gives him a different meaning of the horrible incident visualized by him. Before catching the man, played by Vijay again, Guru gets into an accident and the new man moves to Chennai where he is mistaken as Guru. Stylish and care free Prasad, the look alike Guru, is a greedy person, who would do anything to earn money and enjoy life. Abinaya mistakes him for Guru and gets him to her house. Sensing his strength, Prasad decides to act as Guru and marry the rich Abhi.

The real Guru comes back and tells everyone the truth. But no one is ready to believe him, as he is outplayed by the wicked Prasad in each and every move. Finally the truth prevails but not before the tensed battle between the two with lot of twists and actions. Before going in to details we must say that ESP is not a proven scientific fact and hence the director putting it as a matter of fact is unacceptable. We could have digested it if the director had presented it in a different manner without pretending to be scientific.

Coming back to the script, the director has come up with a new idea in form of ESP to provide twist in the tale. Though the idea of double role is not new, Bharathan had made the tough of war between the two interesting by conceiving a few interesting sequences. The first half however, is dragging too much to the comfort of the audience. The efforts to convince the father and mother, one by one, play as speed breakers. The way the girl falls for the hero lacks imagination. The ESP imageries and Vijay fighting with Vijay have been executed well.

The director has done well in presenting Vijay - the USP of the film. The hero looks handsome, and stylish. The second Vijay in particular, is simply awesome in his styles. Vijay has presented a virtual treat for his fans by his mannerisms, actions, voice modulations, and body language. Shreya, arguably possessing the most stunning and sexy figure among today’s heroines is simply ravishing. She and the director, of course, pretty well know that acting is not her forte and hence bank on her USP, which is her curvaceous body, to make the proceedings, especially the songs attractive. Namitha is effectively used for a scintillating song.

Santhanam as Guru’s friend doesn’t go overboard and provides some comical relief. Good performers like Sayaji Shinde and Ashish Vidyarthi are wasted in insignificant roles.

A.R. Rahman’s music is outstanding. In fact that songs sound better when heard – and seen – in the movie. ‘Maduraiku Pokaathey’ and ‘Valaiyapatti’ are quite attractive. The remix version is more convincing when seen in the context. The background score is effective in the scenes when Guru gets ESP images.

Balasubramaniam’s camera work is spectacular, especially in song sequences. The scenic beauty of Phuket Island and other locations are amazingly captured. Larencce has made wonders in choreographing. Vijay’s dancing movements are quite stylish. Overall, ‘Azhagiya Tamil Magan’ has nothing new to offer but the movie definitely entertains.
